What is AI assisted software development?

  2. The AI drafts. Features, database schemas, integrations, tests and documentation are generated against the real repository, not pasted from a chat window. Weeks of typing become hours of drafting.
  3. A named engineer reviews every change. Nothing merges without a human who understands it and is accountable for it. Version control keeps the full history.
  4. Staged deployment. Changes are verified in development and staging against realistic data before production sees them, with automated checks in the pipeline.
  5. The client keeps the keys. Code in version control the client can own, infrastructure in the client's cloud account where wanted, running costs visible at cost.

The same discipline that makes any software trustworthy makes AI-built software trustworthy. The difference is that senior time is spent almost entirely on the parts that need judgement.

When is it the wrong approach?

An honest page about AI assisted development should say where it does not fit:

  • Safety-critical software with formal certification requirements needs traditional verification processes, whatever writes the code.
  • Codebases nobody will maintain. If there is no plan for who owns the system after launch, faster building just gets you to abandonment sooner.
